As you know I am a proud mom of two children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD For short). Recently we were at our martial arts place where they held an open house. My son has been taking Taekwondo since summer of 2021. While I know my son tends to shy away from physical activities (and he has in the past-he has come along way in overcoming his fear I admit) because his legs coordination is sufficient, but not that of his peers of the same age at the same time. Ever since he has existed his father and I have done what all parents can do for their children: Encourage and build him up. When I get the chance I try to do my best everyday before he walks out the door for school after he finishes getting ready to not only tell him he is smart and strong, but also have him look in the mirror and repeat it after me. Affirmations are for all ages. His dad tells him constantly to hold his up and be proud, to learn that everyone makes mistakes when my son is ashamed and tries to hold his down. He also tells our son when you say our name you say it with pride. So yes when I hear my son randomly say his full name with pride I just love it. When he recently when roller skating for the first time two days ago and fell, but kept getting up I could only be proud of him. I knew he didn't want to be on the roller rink floor, but I am doing my best to teach him you can't give up. One of the big takeaways in martial arts is you can't give up.
My message to you dear reader, do not give up. Slow down take a deep breath, but stay strong.
